Senator Warren Urges Treasury and Fed Not to Use Taxpayer Funds to Bail Out Crypto Billionaires Saylor and CZ Amid Bitcoin Decline

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) sent a letter on Wednesday to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, demanding that both agencies confirm they will not use taxpayer funds to support cryptocurrency investors or firms. Warren warned that any government intervention would transfer wealth from taxpayers to wealthy crypto investors, potentially enriching President Trump through his family's company, World Liberty Financial. The letter arrives as Bitcoin has fallen roughly 50% from its October peak, with cascading liquidations of leveraged positions exacerbating the sell-off. Warren cited World Liberty Financial's recent sale of 173 wrapped Bitcoin to repay $11.75 million in USDC debt, avoiding liquidation below $63,000. She also highlighted losses among major players: Michael Saylor's Strategy Inc. shares down nearly 20% YTD, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao losing an estimated $30 billion, and Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong losing $7 billion. Retail investors are equally at risk: in 2025, U.S. investors lost or had stolen a record $17 billion in crypto fraud. Warren criticized Treasury Secretary Bessent's evasive response during a February 6 House hearing, where he only referenced 'retained seized Bitcoin.' The Fed acknowledged receipt and plans to respond; the Treasury did not immediately comment. Bitcoin was trading just under $67,000 on Wednesday.
